Cay you change the floor color to either darker or lighter? Do you need to sand the floor first?

We can change the floor color to a darker color using a solvent based color stains, also we can change the floor color to a lighter color using Lime Wash color stains which can change the floor to even a grey color which is very popular these days, the floor will need a deep sanding first to a bare timber before applying the preferred stain color.
